Lachat is pleased to announce a new program for Middle School Students, grades 6-8. Our Farmhands-in-Training, or FITs, will have the opportunity to learn all of the workings of the farm, from animal care to gardening to compost and more! Each week, FITs will meet up with Lachat’s experienced volunteers and staff, and spend time having fun and getting their hands dirty. Activities will include... Learning to care for the farm’s goats, bunnies, and bees Working in Lachat’s Giving Garden, a garden dedicated to providing produce for local families facing food insecurity Maintaining Lachat’s compost, learning the ins and outs of turning garden waste into “black gold” that can nourish future gardens Assisting with the pollinator gardens, ensuring Lachat serves as a habitat for a multitude of insects, birds, and other wildlife Managing invasive species on Lachat's property, learning to identify and remove plants that are damaging to the landscape And more! This is the perfect program for students who are interested in farm life and protecting the environment, and might want to volunteer at Lachat in the future. Our local teens are instrumental to Lachat, and we look forward to expanding our community. WMS students can take Bus 1 after school directly to Lachat for this program!
